Why Do Small Stainless Steel Orders Cost More Per Piece?

Updated November 2026 · 3 min read · Reviewed by the VenusGem production team

Short answer: stainless steel has a 30 pcs minimum per style, and unlike pearl or natural stone styles it cannot be combined with other styles to reach the MOQ. The unit price at 30–100 pcs is noticeably higher than at 300+ pcs, because machine time and material purchasing are less efficient at small volume. A 30 pcs order is accepted — it is simply not the cheapest way to buy stainless steel.

Why the price steps instead of sliding smoothly

Metal work runs on setup: programming, tooling, polishing and plating preparation happen per design regardless of quantity. At 30 pcs that setup is spread over 30 units; at 300 pcs it is spread over 300. Material purchasing behaves the same way — a small stainless order is bought at a less favourable quantity than a large one.

If your collection mixes stainless and beads

A common situation: a brand wants a collection where some styles are stainless steel and others are pearl or natural stone. The pearl and natural stone styles can be grouped to reach their MOQ. The stainless styles cannot be grouped with them or with each other, so each stainless style needs its own 30 pcs.

Planning tip

If you are testing a new market with a small budget, start with the bead-strung styles where combining makes a 40 pcs order viable, and add stainless steel once a style has proven demand. It avoids paying small-volume stainless prices on designs you may not repeat.

Ways to reduce the per-piece cost

  • Consolidate: fewer stainless styles at higher quantity beats many styles at 30 pcs each.
  • Plan a repeat: a style you intend to reorder can be produced at a better volume the second time.
  • Keep the finish simple — a single plating colour is cheaper than a two-tone finish.
  • Decide packaging early; it does not reduce the metal cost but it avoids re-quotes.

Questions buyers ask

What is the MOQ for stainless steel jewelry?

30 pcs per style. The MOQ applies per style and cannot be pooled across styles.

Can I combine stainless steel with pearl styles to reach the MOQ?

No. Stainless steel is produced with per-design tooling and plating, so each stainless style carries its own 30 pcs minimum.

Why is the price higher at 30 pcs than at 300 pcs?

Setup work — programming, tooling, polishing and plating preparation — is per design and does not shrink with quantity. At 300 pcs the same setup is spread over ten times as many units.

Do brass and silver have the same rule?

Brass and 925 sterling silver also cannot be combined with other styles. Their MOQ is confirmed per design when we review your list.
